Tony leapt from his place of honor ranging rump between Delphia’s cakes. Deftly, he dove into her closet. Delphia wrapped herself in her comforter, feigning sleep. They heard Thornton Gilbert, the family patriarch, stepping from his bedroom. Tony and Delphia cringed as their father’s footsteps reverberated down the stairs. Tony peeked out to see if his mother followed. She did not. Tony took this opportunity to slip back into his own bedroom.
From his bed Tony heard muffled voices at the front door. Soon that door closed and he heard those same muffled voices downstairs. Whomever had come to the door was now inside. Tony couldn’t contain his curiosity. He threw on a bathrobe, intending to investigate. It’s not often that their doorbell rang at three o’clock in the morning.
“Julesy!!”
Tony used the affectionate moniker for his friend, all the while wondering why he’d showed up on their doorstep at this hour. Jules was in the process of explaining himself to Tony’s dad.
“…and we got into a fight. And he put me out. Mr. Gilbert, I don’t have anyplace to go. It’s cold outside. I was wondering if I could stay here until the morning. konya escort I’ll go to school and talk to my guidance counselor. I think I can handle things from there.”
Dawn was five hours away. The school bus would come in three.
“Ummm, sure Jules, sure. D’you want me to call your dad and tell him where you are?”
“No, Mr. Gilbert. Please don’t do that. I don’t want him to know where I am. You understand, don’t you?”
“Ummm….ummm. Yeh. I understand,” Mr. Gilbert answered.
In reality, Thornton Gilbert knew he’d have to contact Jules’ parents. It’s what friends and neighbors did. It’s what he’d want if ever he had to emancipate Tony. Thornton decided to make that call later in the morning.
“Come on in. Take your jacket off, Jules. Ummm, you don’t mind sleeping on the couch, do you?”
Of course, Jules didn’t mind. He’d spent a good chunk of his childhood playing on that couch in the Gilbert’ family room, had fucked Delphia on it a time or two, too.
Mr. Gilbert went to get a thick comforter for Jules. He brought a towel and a washcloth, too.
“I’ll see you in the morning,” he said, leaving Tony and Jules alone in the family room. Tony waited until he heard her father settling into bed upstairs.
“The FUCK!! What happened to you!!” konyaaltı escort Tony opened.
Tony was aware of Jules’ ex-communication. He couldn’t believe that Jules’ own family was shunning him. He suspected this sudden emancipation flowed from that earlier action.
It did.
“He caught me fucking another girl,” Jules answered.
“Who?” asked Tony.
Jules didn’t want to answer honestly. Instead, he inserted Martha Costellano’s name where Nancy’s should have been.
“How did he catch you and Martha?” Tony asked. “You TOLD him?”
Jules was flummoxed. He didn’t lie well.
“Y-yes. I didn’t want to lie to him,” Jules lied.
“DAMN, dawg!! And he put your ass out of the house!! What are you going to do?”
Delphia Gilbert was just now making her way down the stairs. She wore her housecoat with her nightgown underneath. Under that she wore nothing. Seeing Jules, her saucy attitude returned.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY HOUSE?” she demanded.
“I won’t be here long,” Jules mumbled.
“He’ll be here as long a I say he can be here, girl. Go back to bed.” Tony ordered.
“Anh ahh. Anh ahh. Get your shit and get out!!” Delphia said.
“His dad put him out of the house, Delphia.” Tony remarked.
This cast things korfez escort into a different light. Delphia knew that Jules wasn’t ready to fend for himself. None of them were. The fact that her father had gone back to bed while Jules was downstairs told her that he’d approved this sleepover. She didn’t have the authority to kick Jules out. And she knew it.
“What’d you do?” she asked.
“It’s a long story,” Jules replied.
“I got time. Did it have to do with us?” Delphia continued.
“No,” said Jules, without elaborating.
She knew that Jules’ parents didn’t like her, given that she’d led their son into sin. Delphia hadn’t been to the Kittridge home in months, not even to borrow a cup of sugar. And now her heart’s desire was back within her grasp.
“Well, y’all stay down here. I’m going back to bed,” she announced.
And she left. Tony took up a spot in the family barcalounger next to the couch. He and Jules chatted awhile. Tony told Jules about his conversation with Rosanne earlier.
“Phone sex?” said Jules.
They both laughed. Neither man admitted that he’d been having sex with his sister that night. Tony wanted to know how Jules had hooked up with Martha, his ex-girlfriend’s sister.
“I haven’t fucked her in months!!!” Tony said.
In the morning, Mrs. Gilbert awakened and made a hot breakfast for everyone. It was she that intended to call Abby Kittridge at first light to tell her of Jules’ whereabouts. Jules thanked the Gilberts for their hospitality. He threw on his overcoat. He, Tony and Delphia made their way to the bus stop together.
